Liuzzi set for car career

Vitantonio Liuzzi, the 20 year old from Pescara who some regard as the next big thing in Formula One, is set to move into the German Formula 3 championship in 2002. Liuzzi got the good news after winning the karting world championship at Kerpen on 29th October. Besides winning the kart title, he also finished runner up in Germany’s Formula Renault series this season, becoming the first driver to race cars and karts simultaneously to major honours.

Liuzzi comfortably won the first heat of the world championship Karting race in Kerpen despite the presence of Michael Schumacher, and after finishing fifth in the second heat the Italian took pole position for the two finals. After leading the first, he finished a close fourth which was sufficient to clinch the championship ahead of arch rivals Sauro Cesetti and Davide Fore. This year marked the first time that kartings world championship has been held over 10 races, rather than being decided in a one off event.

Liuzzi scored two wins, four seconds, a third, a fourth and a sixth to win the championship by 35 points. The young Italian is a protégé of ace talent spotter Peter Collins.
